It sounds to me (without seeing the certificate you have) as if you have bought an abbreviated extract of death rather than a full extract of death.
These serve the same purpose as the abbreviated (short) birth certificates and like the short birth certificates do not contain all the information available.
Cheers

Last time I registered a death (in 2011) I was given the opportunity of purchasing multiple certificates, think they were £3 each. These were SEALED copies and were identical to the master copy. Most financ ial institutions will only accept a sealed copy as proof of death, so a "short" copy wouldn't be much use for administrative purposes.
I have never heard of a short form of death cert. I wonder if this has been tampered with in some way, perhaps to conceal a sensitive cause of death?

The abbreviated extract of death certificates are still certified copies (they are even the same size) and may be used for all official requirements but they do not contain all the details a full certificate contains such as cause of death & occupation and informant details etc.

I thought there may be a logical reason for this type of certificate e.g. to notify someone about a relative's death without giving all details.

So, there IS a short form death certificate? Yes or no?
Vera I wondered about an interim death certificate but wouldn't there be something on it to say that?
Guy - when I have sent for death certs for family history purposes, they haven't been sealed copies as far as I can remember. (All my family history stuff is in storage).

Not sure what form Coroner's interim comes in. Whether same as full dc with cause of death blank or different cert altogether

As far as I know "abbreviated extract of death" certificates only relate to Scottish registrations - I certainly have never issued, seen or heard of a short death certificate.
Interim death certificate are issued by the coroner to allow family/executors to deal with the practical issues of the estate of a deceased person when there is going to be an inquest which can be held many months (or more) after the death. They just record the fact (name/date/place) of the person's death for legal purposes. The death can't be registered (and the cause of death shown) until after the inquest verdict is known.
Short birth certificates are still issued (free) at every birth registration and additional ones can be purchased later (although I can't imagine why you would want more).Last edited by AntonyM; 20-01-18, 10:47.Retired professional researcher, and ex- deputy registrar, now based in Worcestershire.
