  • MacGregors of Ross-shire

    Hello,

As is often the case, I've hit a wall, this time with my patrilineal line. This is as far as I've got based off of certificates, census records and Scotland'sPeople.

    ********McGregor (2000 - )
    ********McGregor (1965 - )
    Robert G. McGregor (1928 - 2008)
    Alexander G. MacGregor (1895 - 1961)
    Alexander MacGregor (1860 - 1933)
    Alexander MacGregor (1815 - 1861)
    Simon MacGregor (1788/1796 - 1859)

The Alexander born Alexander was born in Contin, in Ross-shire. His father was born in Fodderty in 1815, to Simon and Margaret MacGregor. His parents married in 1811, in Fodderty. Both died in Fodderty. Alexander married the English Eliza Streater in 1847, and died in Contin in 1861. Simon gave his date of birth as being somewhere between 1788 and 1796 according to census and death records. He said he was born in Contin but I can find no baptism.

    I would appreciate any help.

    Thanks,

    Adam

According to Simon's dc in 1859, father is Alexander. The only baptism I can see on SP for a Simon Macgregor is for 1882 Kilmorack RD Invernessshire
Did you ever find Simon with family on the 1841 census?

        Edit
        Kilmorack baptism should read 1782

There's a 1796 Inverness baptism for a Simon MacGregor son of Alexander. Right time too. I have never been able to locate him on the 1841 census.

The mother on the 1796 baptism (Ancestry) is Anne McBean. According to the SP dc for Simon 1859, mother is Mary Grant.

Wonder where they are in 1841, Catherine b 1828/30 Dingwall should be with them as she had some learning difficulties according to the census when she was living with Neil.

Could you also confirm for me that the Alexander MacGregor that died in 1861 in Contin was the son of Simon?

And thanks. So he was the son of Alexander and Mary Grant.

Yes, Alexander McGregor who died 1861 was the son of Simon and Margaret McGregor

                Alexander McGregor
                Gardener (Dom Servant)
                Married to Eliza Streater
Died 30 July 1861 at Kinellan aged 45 years
Father Simon McGregor, Farmer (dec), Mother Margaret McGregor ms McKenzie
Cause of death Bronchitis 18 days
                Informant son Simon McGregor present
                Registered at Contin

I had a quick look for a marriage between Alexander McGregor and Mary Grant. Can only see one on SP but probably too early at 1848.

Also, does anyone have Simon's date of death? I'm adding it to my file.

Thank you very much. Now we just need to find a marriage record for his parents and a baptism if there is one.
