Subsequent analysis has revealed that hackers hijacked and hid malware inside versions of Avast's CCleaner application available for download between August 15 and September 12.
Anyone who downloaded the 5.33 version or updated their existing product during this timeframe became infected with a covert backdoor capable of spying on everything they did online.
My recommendation would be to check the version you have, and if it is 5.33, either remove or update it. Following this ensure that your AV/Anti-Malware software is up to date and run a full scan.

Personally I have never used it, nor do I ever intend to. IMO its snakeoil..

Nothing, it isn't needed.. Its placebo effect is far greater than any benefit you can get from using it.

We have never used anything remotely like CCleaner on any of our PCs/Laptops in the last 20+ years, and can count the number of issues we have had due to cookies or junk on one hand.

Ultimately the secret is not to go around downloading every piece of rubbish recommended by armchair experts and other keyboard warriors frequenting internet forums..

In addition to the above, YOU, the user, are the first line of defence against viruses/malware and other unwanted issues. Antivirus/Antimalware apps are nothing but a safety net.

Would you make a large purchase without researching it first ? Downloading an item of software should be no different.. Research it thoroughly, read reviews (especially the bad ones).

Just going ahead and installing something just because "Bob on t'web" said it would "cure all your ills" is asking for trouble, and could lead to either your every keystroke/activity being logged or all your files (including that backup drive you plug in every day) being encrypted with no chance of retrieval.
