        My DIL's gt grandmother's middle name was Mafeking but I have never found anything to suggest why. No connection with the army or South Africa.

          Anything to do with the year of birth? I knew of someone with the forename Peace, who was born Nov/Dec 1918.
          Also of a girl born in January 2000 who was "Millie," after the millennium.

            Yes of course, Jay, I never thought of that, she was born 20th May 1900 , 4 days after the relief of Mafeking

            Edit: We tend to forget how horrific that war was; the papers would have been full of that news for weeks afterwards.
