There is a death for Robert Jasper in 1848 aged 42 in Montgomery. Would fit the age you would expect him to be. Will keep looking.

I wonder if this 1851 census is Mary's mother?

Hi Elaine and Lin ... thanks very much for your help, glad to see you are having more luck than I did trying to find Mary etc.

          I did find the 1851 servant but wasn't sure as I haven't found her birth/baptism or 1841
          Jasper family census info.

Wondering why her father isn't recorded as deceased on her marriage entry in 1853 ???

Useful info ... presume they were living in Montgomeryshire in 1841 and Mary younger than Elizth.

I've found some of their children on Powys baptisms ... but it got a bit confusing as Robt. Wm. 1864, Wm. Chas. 1860 and Charles 1858 parents listed as Richard & Mary Ann(e)
Richard 1854, Wm. 1860 and Sarah Ann 1861 parents listed as Richard and Ann(e)

                          Every bit of info helps

I wonder if the death of a Richard Hewitt aged 40 in Dec 1864 Montgomery is him?
                          Yes Chrissie, that's Mary's husband.

If so, with the age and occupation of Mason, I wonder if this is him before marriage in 1851
Yes, that's him with his parents.

Struggling to find info about Mary Ann(e) Jasper before marriage in 1853 ... e.g. her birth/baptism or 1841 census. Elaine found her working as a servant in 1851.

Not found Richard and Mary Ann(e) together after their marriage e.g in 1861 or Mary Ann(e) widow, remarriage or death thereafter. Any help in tracking them down much appreciated.

We often come across that, and I'm convinced that it has a lot to do with HOW the minister asked the question.

"What is your father's name and occupation?"

I think that question probably did not always attract the added information "but he's dead".

                            while .........

"What is your father's name and occupation, and is he still alive?"

would always get the answer IF the person knew ......

...... ie, father might have deserted the family, whereabouts unknown, alive or dead not known.

The reverse does happen of course ............ fathers declared deceased but still very much alive somewhere else!
