" VEGLIIL CIELD CON TEHEREZZA SUL VOSTRO PRESENTE E FECONDI DI GIOIE IL VOSTRO AVVENIRE"

under neath is written " Dal santuario di Pompei

Veglie is a small place on the heel of Italy west of Lecce and north of Gallipoli

      but Google translates
VEGLIE CIELO CON TENEREZZA SUL NOSTRO PRESENTE E FECONDI DI GIOIE IL VOSTRO AVVENIRE

      as:

FAIRY SKY WITH TENDERNESS ON OUR PRESENT AND FRUITFUL JOY YOUR FUTURE

btw, Dal santuario di Pompei = Del santuario di Pompei

Is it Latin, or is it Italian?

When I asked google translate to identify the language it said Italian and it translated as per post #3

Have a look at this site to see if your medal is featured there http://www.gwpda.org/medals/italmedl/italy.html

Isn,t it more likely to be a religious medal than a war medal?

Yes, pretty sure it,s a religious medal. My Italian is rubbish but I translate it as roughly being

Heaven watches tenderly over our present and brings us fertility in the future.

Perhaps Mary of Italy could give a better translation.

It's Italian; I don't think the transcription's quite accurate, but a rough translation would be:

May the heavens watch tenderly over your present, and fill your future with joy.
