  • Purchased a New Mac Book shall I transfer my tree over?

Ive just purchased a new mac book as old mac was years old and struggling. Now all my data etc is on the old mac now I'm scared nervous about transferring the whole tree over to the new machine using gedcom. How will i ensure every fact/detail moves over by just exporting the file as a gedcom? Is there a better safer way of doing this???

Im using FTM for mac as my main software program.

    thanks

I'm not a FTM user, but I think these links may help:

Surely you can copy all the relevant files onto a memory stick. Install FTM on the new computer and load up the files. If it all goes wrong you will still have all the stuff on your old computer ready for another try.
I don't use FTM myself but the above would work for any type of data. The main thing being you need to install the programs onto the new computer ready to receive the data.

Ditto. I would not use a gedcom to transfer, but rather transfer the FTM files. Did you upgrade FTM versions? Still the new version should be able to read the old one.

Also - did you ask your Mac store to transfer the old mac's files? Some will do that as part of the purchase - if you want all of them, of course.

The memory stick sounds a sensible option.

I didn't upgrade FTM it's the same version.

Purchased new Mac online so was unable to use the shoos transfer facility unfortunately.

Just wondering if a back up to the iCloud would help as well.

            Thanks for all the help

I have my tree backed up on two memory sticks, Dropbox (cloud storage) and a separate hard disc. Can't have too many backups!

I agree about the back ups I'm clearing a day next week to do the transfer. Utilising the extra back up of my Sons assistance - well they know everything don't they
