  • Frank Baker Born Fulham abt.1890

I am looking for information on the family of Frank Baker who I believe was born in Fulham about 1890 and his father was Alfred Baker.

My interest is because he married my Great Aunt Elizabeth McComb in Londonderry Northern Ireland on 8th March 1918 in Londonderry while stationed with the Royal Navy in Londonderry

I never heard any of my family mention the name Baker so I am interested to hear from any potential relatives on this branch of my family.

I guess they may have left for England after their marriage but that is speculation.

I would appreciate any help with this

    Best Regards

    Gareth McComb

P.S. Here is Frank's official service record.

    Name Baker, Frank
    Official Number: K2269
    Place of Birth: Fulham, London
Date of Birth: 10 June 1890

Looking on Free BMD there is birth in the 1st Quarter of 1890 but this does not match the birth on his service record. I will look at the 1891 and 1901 census when I can get onto the Find my Past website. There seems to be an error when I log on. regards

Hello Gareth and welcome to the forum.
I'm not having much luck so far - Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate? If so, what was the occupation of father, Alfred Baker?

This seems to be the same Frank Baker, with the service number K2269, from ancestry

UK, Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services, 1900-1928

          Name: Frank Baker
          Gender: Male
          Birth Date: 6 Jun 1890
          Birth Place: Hulham, London
          Service number: K2269
First Service Date: 10 Mar 1909
First Ship Served On: Vivid II
Last Service Date: 7 Apr 1921
Last Ship Served On: Vivid II

His service records shows he was age 12 and labourer when he joined, but no mention of parents or of marriage (that I can see).
My grandmother, on the beach, South Bay, Scarborough, undated photo (poss. 1929 or 1930)

Researching Cadd, Schofield, Cottrell in Lancashire, Buckinghamshire; Taylor, Park in Westmorland; Hayhurst in Yorkshire, Westmorland, Lancashire; Hughes, Roberts in Wales.

              Thanks for that, Gareth.
Do you have documentation to confirm the link between the Frank Baker of the marriage cert and the Frank Baker RN K2269? No age at marriage given in the details above
I still haven't been able to locate the sailor in 1911 census :( and will have another go at earlier census returns for Frank, s/o Alfred, a contactor.

I'm not very good on military records, can anyone help with the record of K2269?
The marriage above was on 8 March 1918.
Does the record say that he was a leading stoker from 1 Jun 1916 until 28 Feb 1918, when he changed ships (or was shore based) 1 Mar 1918 to 27 May 1918? I can't make out the names of the ships, which I realise could include a spell on shore in a barracks with a ship name.

It seems Vivid II was the Stokers and Engine Room Artificers School at Devonport.

I think this was where K2269 was posted 1 Mar to 27 May 1918.

I also had great trouble reading that service sheet for Frank Baker K2269

parts of it were almost as bad as some doctors' handwriting used to be :D

                      Thanks Jay,
have a look at these two links and it will show you the connections.

Frank was an absentee voter and his address is my Great Aunt's address and it also show his service number which is then referenced in the second link to his service number

Thanks for that, Gareth - the absentee voters list links the marriage pairing very nicely with the naval record.
I believe the Londonderry absentee voters list was for the 1918 General Election - I wonder exactly when it was compiled; before or after the marriage?

I have since found a possible reference in www.findmypast.co.uk

I found an A J B..... born April, May or June 1922 in Hammersmith with Mother's Maiden Name McCombe

No other siblings found within a 20 year span

                          Any help appreciated

                          Thanks

                          Gareth

Sorry Gareth but because of his year of birth I have had to edit out his full name unless/or until we know that he is deceased, as per our T&C's.
