  • Hi,

Thanks for that birth reference, I will send off for it. And that's really interesting about Robert Cooper living at 12 Sion Square in 1891, he married Esther's sister and I have some of their family tree as I have been in contact with a lady whi is a decendant of the Cooper's and she has been very helpful to me in the past.

I've got Ancestry subscription Wal, just point me in the right direction of what I'm looking for.

Thanks again everyone, you're all putting so much thought and effort into this,

    Mole

      • I've been harvesting the many Charles Davis's on the 1871 census, so we can see what we're working with. Nº 13 has a brother named Louis. I've shown this same family on the 1881 census.

There's also a Charles H Davis & Lewis E Davis listed on the 1881 census as servants. They could be brother's too, but I can't find them on other censuses or another family with brothers with these names. Could they have been listed twice on the 1881 census ? At their home address & also at their place of work ?

Just keep hold of that birth for now J. Don't order it just yet, there's too many Charles Davis's & we need to untangle them.

            Hi Wal
I don't think that birth will be him. Wandsworth is the wrong area. It needs to be in one of the reg districts in the East End. Stepney, Shoreditch, Whitechapel, Mile End, Bethnal Green etc etc.
Also at this time a lot of births went unregistered. After 1875 fines were imposed for non registration of births but even so a lot of births were still not registered.

              • Hi Mole
Do you have a copy of the discharge documents (re Charles Davis) found in David Davis' effects & if so are they the same as his service records on FMP?

Yes I do have a copy and the army no. and description are the same as the attestation papers found, hence they must be the same person. I have sent a copy to Wallaby and deciphered what it says as it's a copy of something that was written on parchment. When I first met R*** N**** who is the grandaughter of David Davis she showed me the original that she had found amongst her mum's things after her mum had died. So armed with this new info, a friend of hers very kindly went to Kew and it was her who found the original attestation papers at Kew for us. But what was interesting was that she said you could see how the form had been completed at different times by the different colour of ink used on different occasions, but unfortunately she only made black and white copies of the documents, as it might have been helpful to see which parts were completed at the same times ?

Thanks again everyone for all your hard work !

                  • I think I found my grandfather's attestation records on Ancestry & they were in colour, showing the red ink as mentioned in my earlier thread. So it's important that we see Charle's attestation records in colour to understand the notes.

                      Hi Wal
His records on FMP are in colour. Some of the forms are printed in red & there are some handwritten notes in red ink.

I've spent since Thursday eve transcribing the attestation papers for Charles Davis, using different coloured font to show when each part was filled in, but I've just finished it and gone to post it and it said I needed to refresh the page and login again, which I did, and when I went to auto restore my post it had only saved a little bit of it, so I'm afraid I haven't got the time to do it all again. For those of you who have FMP sub the colour copies are available on there.

Sorry everyone, I feel a bit dejected now,
