Ellen consistently gives her birthplace as Walsall, Staffordshire - all the other children are Birmingham. I therefore believe the 1861 and 1871 censuses for the rest of the Gargan family are correct. It is a shame that none of the births were registered and it doesn't look like they were baptised either. As you do not have the mother's maiden name you will never be sure of finding the correct marriage for John and Mary. I have searched each child without surname on Ancestry , Family Search and Find My Past and there is absolutely no sign of them. It is highly unlikely that Gargan has been mistranscribed so badly that we can't find births for any of the 5 children.

Mary Gargan 15 July 1889 Workhouse Infirmary, Western Road ???. Informant looks like H Gibbon Matron. If this is my Gt Gt Gran she died in a workhouse like one of her Daughters Fanny. So sad. Still not sure if I am right track though. Not sure what to do now. Help please !!!!!
What does it say in the Occupation section on the death certs?
Usually for a woman it gives "wife/widow of ...." and her husband's occupation.

Its not helpful at all. The rank/occupation says unknown. My friends theory is that Mary wasnt an occupent of the workhouse but that she ended up there because it had an hospital close to her home.

I cannot thank you all enough for your help. This has been driving me nuts for a few years. The spelling of the surname has really made it difficult. I am now hoping that there is a coroners report for John in the hope, that it might give me a clue. I am also going to compile a list of all the addresses that I have for them. When I go to Birmingham I shall try and look them up but I am now beginning to think that I will never find out where in Ireland the family came from. If I do find anything, I will let you know. If you ever need any manuel look ups in Leeds or near by I am happy to do this for you.
