    Hi
My daughter and I have the family history bug. We keep hitting a brick wall though. We get so far online and then find we need to visit different places round the country to find out more. Does anyone know of a service that matches people like us geographically? Where we could research in our areas (Swindon and Bristol) for information and we could ask people to search in their areas for us? (The genealogist services are too expensive for us)
    Thanks for reading

There is a Research Request section of the forum that you can ask for help.

      Welcome to the forum Sycamores

Another way is to click here. This will take you to our reference library where you will find a list of counties with forum members who have offered to do look ups at their local Record Offices. Not all counties are covered but you may be lucky. Click on the name and you can send a query by private message. They will be notified by email that you have sent them a message.

You could also put your query on this forum as there are some very clever people here to help you out.

Its also worthwhile investigating membership of the Family History Societies for the areas you are interested in. They may well have transcribed local records or have members willing to do look ups for you and could welcome your offer to reciprocate with a search in archives within your area.

If one discounts the popular genealogical records BMDs, Census and baptisms, marriages & burials then only about 10% of family history records are online.
These are the real records of family history the ones that put the meat on the bare genealogical bones.

To research these records then there are really two main choices, visit the repositories/archives in person or get someone else (either a volunteer or a professional) to visit the repositories/archives.
Some records are available online, transcribed by enthusiasts, some records are available on CD or as digital downloads, but the vast bulk of these informative records are still resting peacefully in written form often covered in dust in repositories and archives.
          Cheers

Some of the members may have the CDs from the Family History Societies and if their Terms and Conditions permit it, as every group is different, they could look things up for you. Not all counties/parishes are available on the online sites.

If you wanted to get your own CD copies, GenFair is the website which covers many of the Societies: http://www.genfair.co.uk/

Many thanks for the tip Wendy. It's so nice to be part of a community. Family History research is so much fun, but it can be isolating.
