With the help of some really kind people on this forum I have found my Great Great grandfather; John McGowan, b 11 August 1868 Leavenseat, West Calder. I bought some credits for ScotlandsPeople and got his birth records with his Parent's listed as John (Ironstone miner) & Jane (nee Wilson) it says they got married on 25 Sep 1866, in Johnstone. I cannot find a record of the marriage though. I also tried looking for them in the 1871 Census and could only find John & Barbara McGowan - they have a son, John, who would be the right age and a daughter called jane (can't read the age). But his occupation is a flax spinner so I think it is not them. Can I appeal for help again to find a records of marriage or a hit on a census? Also is there any better way to search Scottish records? I have wasted about £10 and not found out anything that people on this forum had not already told me. Thank you for taking the time to read this, Suzanne

You looked on SP for the marriage? Did you check to see if Johnstone is covered in their records?
Sorry to ramble, but I checked FamilySearch.
FS doesn't have parish registries that cover the period in question. Sorry, I don't know which Johnstone they married in::

The key is to find where the Johnstone Parish Register for the period might be.
Click on the format you like - you can see which PRs are available:
And then, interesting, not quite on topic, but,
Did you notice that for John McGowan b1868, baptism is indexed on familysearch

FS index of West Calder doesn't have any joy:

And a general search bears no joy, either:

Hmm, but even if the PR doesn't exist, the civil reg record should survive?Last edited by PhotoFamily; 13-01-13, 03:17.

how many towns called johnstone are there in west calder, or surrounding counties?
did you look for a death for jane mcgowan nee wilson between 1866-1871?
did you look for a marriage of john to barbara in that time frame?
did you use the 'traditional soundex' option when searching on there names? less is more in searches, so i would search for a john mcgowan marriage between 1860-1870 scotalnd and see how many matches come up. then narrow it down to one page for results, using the county i guess.
scotlandpeopls is designed to eat up your credits, so be careful with your searches, and the images you get. good news though, you always have access to the images you've already downloaded, so no need to buy them more than once.

I can't find any record of death (or any records at all) for Jane McGowan nee Wilson. I have tried different combinations of spellings across three different sites.
My Grandmother thinks that John McGowan was originally from Ireland.
I ordered the marriage certificate for John McGowan jr (b 1868). He was married to Edith Turk in Pelton Fell, Durham in 1891. It said his father is John McGowan Coal Miner and one of the witnesses was called Martha McGowan (I don't know who she is). I was working on the assumption that Martha could be a sister, aunt or cousin but I can't see the links.
On the 1911 census it lists John McGowan Jr birthplace as Leavingseat, Edinburgh. There was only one john mcgowan born in leavenseat in 1869 so I think this must be him. He was also a coal miner and then served in the medical corp in WW1. He survived being sent to Gallipoli. He had three children Alice, Jane and Albert (my gt grandfather).

I've got the family in 1881, I think ...and there is a sister Martha. Family name given as McGowins. There is a family of WILSONS living next door
