  • A Golden Wedding and an extra grandchild

I have a bit of a block on finding names for the grandchildren of John and Eliza Barber from Canterbury.

My starting point was a family photograph taken at their 50th wedding anniversary. We knew the names of one of their children (Reginald) and two grandchildren (Patricia and Michael) but the rest were unknown. I have been working away at the puzzle for a couple of months and have now got lots of names, mostly matched to the people in the photograph, but I now have exhausted all the possibilities to fit names to all the grandchildren and I have an extra child in the photo that I haven't found a name for.

This is the photograph taken in 1935. I believe that the children of John and Eliza are seated each side of them with their respective spouses standing behind them and their children seated on the ground.

And this should be a link to the tree on Ancestry

You can see in the tree that there are 4 boys and 6 girls in the grandchildren row. The oldest boy, Peter, I believe is standing behind the central couple. The youngest boy, baby Michael, is sitting on his father's lap. So this leaves an extra boy seated on the ground with the girls.

I have searched FreeBMD and followed all the lines in Ancestry so I am at loss for how to solve the mystery. Am I missing something really obvious?

Elizabeth, thank you for all that but I already have that information. Were you not able to open the link to the tree on Ancestry?

It is the name of a boy grandchild that is missing. There are 5 boys in the photo and I have only found names and DOB for 4 of them.

You could use the GRO again to establish the missing child.

You can put the surname and mother's maiden name in the search boxes. You have to trawl through the years and the male/female sexes.
If they were born after 1911 the information should come up anyhow.

Oh, sorry, Elizabeth. I thought that link would work. Can anyone tell me how to do it then?

I'll go and have another look to see where I went wrong....

I've changed it to a Public tree and re-copied the link. Could you try this one and see if it works

if the tree is public then it should work, you seem to be sending an invite. You should be able to copy the URL on the address bar.

                    It will look like:

you do have a marriage for Florence to Peett and there is a birth for these in Farnham.

I use FMP to search, you can then use GRO to confirm the details

                        Dennis

you don't have to subscribe to search, you can add mothers maiden name.

I did have them on the tree for a while but then I discounted them because I don't think Florence was married. There is a death registered for her in her maiden name. There is no spouse for her in the photograph and I couldn't see why she would be married to someone so far from home when the whole family are very firmly based in Canterbury. There is a Florence May Barber born in Hampshire 1907 who I think is the one who married Peett

There are some articles in the paper about Florence and Charles. His address is Victoria Row, Northgate, Canterbury whilst Florence is in Whitstable. They have seperated by 1930 and he wants to reduce his maintenance so it goes to the Canterbury Police Court.

Looking for Ward, Moore, Hunt, Warren...and who was Gertrude Wills

so it is likely to be right then, as they are back in the area.

Yes, it looks as if I will have to reinstate them :o Maybe she reverted to her maiden name in later life. More investigation needed tomorrow.

Night night all. And thanks again.

There is another article it states that Peett is shop owner in Victoria Road. Would make sense that she reverted to maiden name.

I really shouldn't be glued to the computer this morning - lots of other things need doing today but this is so intriguing. I've been back to FreeBMD and found that the marriage of Florence and Charles happened in the same quarter as the birth of Dennis in 1927. I'm guessing her father was not happy! No wonder she went a long way from Canterbury!

More investigations needed - who needs housework!
