I don't know what version of FTM you have and although this says it's for a Mac, it would work the same way wouldn't it?

If you make two copies of your whole tree, then do your son's line on one and hers on the other then you will have two trees.

I have done it using the split in Ancestry method on there. ....eventually.

Thank you all for your help. It's been an interesting exercise to say the least

Well done Kat - from now on you will be the one we ask when we want to do it!

"Modem this only deleted my son. My husband and I were still there with all our ancestors"

Glad the problem is now fixed but how odd that you were unable to do similar using FTM. Have just had a play with an old version of my FTM tree on my netbook and picked two entirely separate individuals. It removed everything to do with them including parents, grandparents etc etc.

Modem, I can do that too but just parents and grandparents.
In FTM 2005 there are three options:

            1) ancestors -this picks up direct ancestors ONLY
            2) 'descendants including spouses'
            3) 'descendants not including spouses'

There isn't an option for 'ancestors including spouses'.
I have no option to chose the number of generations either.

In the past I have made several descendant trees from all my separate lines to include each particular ancestor's spouses and children.
I only use FTM to back up my family tree and then back that up on an external b/u system.

The reason I wanted to split this on Ancestry was because by downloading to FTM, splitting and then uploading again to Ancestry the tree loses it's ability to open census or other document images - you are left with just the sources in text. I like to be able to open any source and see the original images.

Must be the difference between FTM versions 2005 and 2006. All I do is follow the 3 steps I outlined above (highlight individual, click on "People", click on "Delete individual", say "Yes" to the warning box and absolutely everything attached to that person is gone!
