  • Norfolk Records

I have recently come across ancestors from Norfolk. Unfortunately, the 1851 enumerator who recorded them living in London didn't bother to ask exactly where in Norfolk they were from which does complicate matters. So far I haven't found many Norfolk records online - even the IGI doesn't seem to have as much for Norfolk as for some of my other counties. Can any one recommend Norfolk web sites please?

If I were you, I would look up Norfolk in our Wiki as there are bound to be lots in there.

The marriage index, published by Norfolk FHS, is the only source that has anything like county wide coverage, though if your people left wills in the same sort of period, that index is online, and I think that the WIKI has a link.

None of the online sources have anything approaching that and the IGI is particularly poor. Norfolk has over 700 ancient parishes so that, even if you do find references to your surname, it may be very difficult to be sure you have found the right family.

Thats the trouble with Norfolk people going to London - the enumerators couldnt understand the accent and they couldnt write the village name! My early ones are either Norfolk or Norwich - I expect the enumerator said, "Erm, cant understand that, whats the nearest big town?"

                    What names are your people?

Oh, heather, how true, how true!
One of my Skillings did tell the enumerator the name of his home village. Armston. You have to have seen the baptism record, to realise it was Hempstead!

Well, when Mundesley is pronounced "Munsley", "Hunstanton" as "Hunston" (by some parts, at least), "Happisburgh" as "Haysburgh"...

Non-Norfolk-born enumerators don't stand much chance, really!

Even those of us who are Norwich born and bred have difficulty with place names, so "foreigners" have no chance of getting it right!!!

Stukey, Lairinsett, Sturdy, Hunny, Reeffam, Wifton, Burgh pronounced Borough, but Borough pronounced Burgh.
I was taught to pronounce my avatar Cly, but my great uncle, born in the next parish, said Clay.
I can just about cope with the "local" ie Holt names but outside my area, I'm completely lost. And it doesn't help that with so many villages have the same or a very similar name.

Exactly what I have found Phoenix. I look at a map of Norfolk and see that mass of villages - it's a big county after all - and think I am looking for a needle in a haystack!

My 4xgreat grandparents were HENRY MOORE and SARAH - maiden name unknown as I haven't found a likely marriage anywhere. In 1841 they were living in Covent Garden,London where Henry was a glass merchant. Both said they weren't born in Middlesex. Henry, very unhelpfully for me, died in 1844.

Sarah was still alive for the 1851 census although she died about 6 months later. Her birthplace just says "Norfolk". At least all you Norfolk people have made me feel sorry for the enumerator, whereas I have been cursing him up until now! Unless they met and married in London, it seems reasonable to at least start by assuming Henry was from Norfolk too....he might well not be, of course.

In 1841 there is another family called ADCOCK at the same address as Henry and Sarah's daughter and son in law (my 3xgreat grandparents) who also give their birthplaces as Norfolk in 1851. The parents are about the same age as Henry and Sarah and I have been trying to make some connection - brother, sister of either, perhaps? - without any success. The father was born in Stiffkey and the mother in "Matsil,Dereham". I assume this means Mattishall which is a place near Dereham. No Moores to be found online in either place though.

I'll keep plugging away; something may turn up one day.

                                Thanks for your help.

Oh, I've just been looking at the Wiki Norfolk page and have found someone looking for MOORE from Stiffkey (where the Adcocks came from) in the 18th century on the Norfolk Surnames website. I'm off to email her now. Fingrs and toes crossed......

I wish you luck with the Adcocks. I have one in my tree, and am unlikely to find any more. They seem to be all over the place, but never convincingly "mine".

Sorry: Here goes - it's complicated, I warn you!

1841 at Queen Street,Brompton,Kensington,Middlesex, at the same address as their daughter, son-in-law and 4 grandchildren
HENRY MOOR aged 60 Glass cutter Not born Middx.
SARAH MOOR aged 60 Not born Middx.
LUSIA MOOR aged 14 Born Middex.
HENRY MOOR aged 10 Born Middx.
                                        Also at the same address:
BENJAMIN ADCOCK aged 25. Coachsmith Not born Middx.
LOUISA ADCOCK aged 30. Not born Middx.
There is a 75 year old woman at the address too:
SARAH CASSAN aged 75. East India Company Pensioner. Born Middx.

                                        However.....also on the same census:

Russell Court,St Martin in the Fields,Westminster,Middx.
HY MOORE aged 55. Glass Merchant. Not born Middx.
SARAH MOORE aged 50. Not born Middx.
SARAH MOORE aged 20. Born Middx.
CAROLINE MOORE aged 15. Born Middx.
LOUISA MOORE aged 12. Born Middx.
HENRY MOORE aged 10. Born Middx.

I know from baptismal records that my 3xgreat grandmother's parents were HENRY and SARAH MOORE and that Henry was a glass merchant so I am sure these two entries relate to the same people. There are too many similarities for them to be two separate families and besides, Henry, aged 10 was baptised at the same time and place as my 2xgreat grandmother who was his niece.

                                        Now to the ADCOCKS:

By 1851 Benjamin is a widower, living with his parents at 35 Grosvenor Mews, St George Hanover Square,Middlesex. My 3xgreat grandparents (Henry and Sarah Moore's daughter and son in law) are living at 30 Grosvenor Mews.

                                        35 Grosvenor Mews.
JAMES ADCOCK. Head. Aged 65. Retired Coachsmith. Born Norfolk,Stiffkey
MARY ADCOCK. Wife. Aged 60. Born Norfolk. Matsil
BENJAMIN ADCOCK. Son. widower. Aged 36. Coachsmith emp. 7 men. Born Cambridge.
WILLIAM ADCOCK. Son. Aged 23. Office Clerk. Born Middx. St George Hanover Square.

By 1861 Benjamin has remarried but his parents are still living with him.
father James's birthplace is still Stiffkey but mother Mary's is down as Dereham.

I did warn you it was complicated!
