  • Ordering extract from 1841 Death Duty Registers

I renewed Find My Past this week, and after mulling it over I paid the extra for the Explorer Subscription.

This gives me access to extras - such as the Death Duty Registers.

I recently ordered the death certificate for Joseph Newton of Bankside who died on 5th November 1840, so I thought I'd look for him in the death duty registers -

    Immediately I found:

    Intestate - Newton Joseph
Administrator or Administratix Jane Newton 48 Bankside
Canterbury Prerogative Court Vol. 1 Folio 64

My question is: Where do I order this from?

I'm hoping it will take me a generation further back with OH's family.

    From the findmypast website:

The Archive of Indexes to Death Duty Registers contains digitised images of the original indexes created by the Estate Duty Office (later to become the Inland Revenue) of all wills and administrations attracting Death Duties from all the Probate Courts in England and Wales. The original indexes are held by The National Archives, London, England, under the series title IR27 and are made available here under license.

        Elizabeth,

just a small word of caution, I've had a couple of these intestate ones, ie they haven't written a will, its just the administration of the estate, & I didn't get any more info than you already appear to have, ie the wife's name, Jane.

It's not a will, where they leave their spoons to Great Aunty Maud, & the bed linen to cousin It.

I could be wrong...not sure what anyone else thinks.

Thanks, Little Nell - why didn't I find that!

By the way, I'm dead chuffed with that find.

We had always assumed that Jane Newton, Joseph's wife, died before him.

I haven't yet found her on the 1841 census but found her on the 1851 and 1861 censuses:

          1851
Jane Newton age 72 living at 79 Bankside, Annuitant, with servant. States she was vorn Lancashire Ashton.

          1861
Jane Newton age 82 Living at Falcon Dock Road W 82 Fundholder born Lancashire Staleybridge. Living with servant.

Now off to find her death!

OH's new found relatives in Australia are going to be pleased!

I may have misunderstood Nell's first post, but it looks to me as if it just tells you where the original indexes are held - so if you looked at that, it would just be the same as the image you have already seen, wouldn't it? I think what you need to know is where the actual Death Duty Registers are held, but I think that will probably be at TNA as well.

But hopefully the info about that is in the link in Nell's second post?

              Thanks, Louise and Kite Runner.

I am aware that I might not get much more information about Joseph as he was intestate, but I suppose I'll never know unless I order it!

I'm pleased with my FMP subscription, though.

I found a death for a Jane Newton in Sep 1865 Croydon (which is where the family were in the 1860s and 1870s.

So in the Death Duty Registers I then found:

              Testator: Newton Jane
              Reisdence: Southwark
Executor Jas Newton (this was her son)
              Court PR Folio 722
