  • New archives card will be available soon

    Family History Federation (Facebook post)

The new ARCHIVES CARD (which replaces the old CARN system) will be live from next Tuesday 3rd March 2020.

But we've already tried it and can reveal you can APPLY TODAY!

As stated on the website, "The ARCHIVES CARD is a single archive reader’s ticket which gives you access to a wealth of original archive material held in archives across the UK. You need to apply for a Card if you wish to view original documents in any of the archives participating in the scheme."

Not mentioned anywhere on the website is that, in the interests of family history researchers everywhere, the Family History Federation made a very substantial financial contribution to the project.

Visit the website today to apply for your card and also to view a listing of participating archives at
    https://www.archivescard.com/

I've filled in my form, without picture, so now I need to go into Chichester within 3 months to get the card.

But, presumably you can get your card from a participating Archive on the day you first visit just as you have always been able to? Obviously with the required ID etc.

So it says - you still need to take ID with you to get the card first time, but at least we won't have to get a card for everywhere we might want to visit!

Good morning. I haven't heard of this before. Could you explain how it works or what it does, please.

There's a link on Caroline's post, it verifies your identity so you can use various archives in person.

I think I have been lucky over the years with the Archives I have used which have all accepted the CARN card. This seems to just be a replacement of that which hopefully will be accepted by all the Archives.
