  • Licensed Victuallers In 1838

    Hello,

I would be grateful if I could be pointed in the right direction to find my gt.x 3 grandfather James Piggott who was on my gt x 2 grandfather's wedding certificate in 1838 in Marylebone as a Licensed Victualler. I am trying to find out the Public House where he lived and the name of his wife and children.

I have searched the net for a list of LV's at that time but no luck.

    With thanks

Have you looked on the 1841 census, Jacquei?

      Hi there,
I checked for James on 1841 census but no luck it looks like he died before then. I have emailed Westminster Archives to see if they have a list of LV's and am waiting for a reply.

      thanks for prompt reply

        Jacquie,

Archive CD Books has produced copies of Pigot's London directories for 1825 and 1839. While the UK operation has closed, there are still affiliates operating in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the US. Or perhaps SKS who has a copy could do a lookup for you and see if there's a listing for your man. Unfortunately, the only directories I have are for Devon and Cornwall.

Most of my licensed victuallers had a fair bit of dosh to share out at their demise. Have you checked for a will on National Archives documents on line?

What was the name of your Gt x 2 Grandfather Jacquei? Have you found him in 1841?

I know that the London Metropolitan Archives has licensed victuallers' applications to magistrates for their licenses. Not sure if they'd have Marylebone or whether that would be in Westminster Archives.

Westminster Archives should have the relevant street/trades directories which would hopefully list this chap and pub.

                      Hi Chrissie,
James Piggott was not on 1841 census so he must have died between 1838 when he was on marriage certificate for my gt grandfather William Piggott. I assume he was still alive then as it did not say deceased. William was born 1794 so James must have been born about 1765-1770.
Thanks for reply Chrissie...guess what I cant remember how I posted this thread...have they altered the forum as I did not have this problem last year.....mind you I think my brain is not as quick as it was...lol !!

Jacquei, if you are looking at the forum listing for the Research Advice board then there are several pages, so if you're looking for an old thread then you might have to look at page 2, page 3, etc.

If you want to make sure not to lose track of a thread then you can subscribe to it - click on "Thread Tools" and one of the options will be to subscribe. Then if you want to see your subscribed threads, it is one of the options in the Forums drop-down menu on the dark blue bar near the top of the screen.

You can also go into your user options (in the user control panel) so that any thread you start or post on will automatically be added to your subscriptions. Assuming that you don't want to get an email every time anybody posts on one of those threads, set the option for thread subscriptions to "no email notification". If you want to unsubscribe from a thread that will be in "Thread Tools".

If you can't be bothered with all that subscribing business, we also have a search facility for the forum, again in the forums drop-down menu, where you can search for a particular thread title or starter, or you can look at your user profile and it will have an option to see all posts by that user.

Now, getting back to James Piggott (if that was his name, I can't remember now!) When you say he isn't on the 1841 census, do you mean you can't find him, or that you've found the rest of the family and he isn't with them? Because in either case, it could be that he was still alive but is just hard to find on the census.

Thank you so much Little Nell,

What I am going to do is to copy your replies into a file and then have a practice, I am determined not to give up. As to James Piggott all I know is that he is William Piggott's father..I dont know who he married or who Williams siblings are. William was born 1794 so I think that James must have been born about 1765-1770. I found out about James from Williams marriage certificate in 1838 In Marylebone which says he is a Licensed Victualler. Iassume he was alive then as it does not say he is deceased

Hence I need to find the Pub where he was LV to see if I can find more info.

                              Thanks again

3rd from left in the top bar is "Forums". It's drop-down includes "Subscribed threads". You should be able to find your own threads that way, as well as any where you've posted a reply.

Don't assume he was still living

I found out about James from Williams marriage certificate in 1838 In Marylebone which says he is a Licensed Victualler. I assume he was alive then as it does not say he is deceased.
                                        Jacquei,

Just because the marriage certificate does not say deceased, this does not mean that James was still alive in 1838. There are many instances where this was not the case.

Also, do you have reason to believe that James was a Licensed Victualler in Marylebone, or is that just where William was married?

That being said, there is a possible James Piggott death in Marylebone that might be yours:

                                        Deaths Dec 1839
Piggott James District: Marylebone Vol. 1 Page 146

Or if the Registrar and/or informant was unsure of the spelling, there's another possibility:

                                        Deaths Jun 1839
Pickett James District: Marylebone Vol. 1 Page 177

If you look outside Marylebone, there are lots of other possibilities, so you might want to get additional information before ordering a death certificate.

                                        Hope this helps -
