laptop not used in 5 years

Hi - we have found a laptop under the stairs ( Hewlett Packard Notebook ) that we haven't used for over 5 years .It starts up perfect - it doesn't have Wifi and it is WindowsXP ...I have tried using the yellow Ethernet cable from the Laptop to the Router but it keeps saying Internet Connection Not Possible " it could be one of your Firewalls is not allowing connection " and other things about HP 20 or something like that .The thing is when my wife is on the Laptop I could be using the Hewlett laptop ...it sounds like something simple preventing connection .It is not an emergency - but would come in handy if I can use it ...

I was having that trouble with this new windows 10 Desktop finally rang BT and they said it was because the settings in my router needed changing , they told me to change a few things you could try

Release and renew IP address for your computer connected to the hub:
a. Press Windows key + X and select “command prompt (admin)”.
b. Type ipconfig /release and hit Enter.
c. Then type ipconfig /renew and hit Enter.
d. Type Exit and hit Enter.

Failing that get onto your provider and maybe they can help
