I haven't used an email program on my computer for at least 10 years, all my emails are held in t'cloud on Gmail, with any non-Gmail addresses forwarding into it.
That way I know my emails are backed up, and I don't have to back them up manually to an external drive that I then have to arrange storage for in another location.

Thanks Grim I did eventually find gmail, and am using it, but not sure what you mean by them being backed up automatically?

gmail holds your data in multiple, geographically independent datacentres, so if one goes offline, your emails are replicated elsewhere.
