YourDictionary: service
Service means different things to different people. In the USA it seems mostly to refer to time spent in the military. In the UK, service tends to suggest providing a service i.e doing something for somebody else, either paid or voluntary.
Many girls (and boys) would have gone into service, so do you have butlers, pantry boys, coachmen, housemaids or cooks in your tree? Maybe charitable workers?
