  • Week 15 (April 8-14): Fire

    1234-0.jpg
    So many possibilities here:
    • fire service in war and peace
    • railway men
    • tragedies
    • blacksmiths
    • firemen on board ship
    • enthusiasm
    Transport: Roads and Railways

    History of firefighting

    Suggestions from Amy Johnson Crow:

Fire provided heat for homes and cooking and provided power for forges and engines. Of course, fire can also be destructive, both on a personal level or in our research (such a record loss in a courthouse fire). Think, too, about place names that make you think of fire.

That must have been scary!! My flatmates once set fire to the bathroom in the flat but I was away in school journey so missed all the "excitement". A new flatmate had arrived a a week early and fell asleep with the lamp on the bed ..... when she woke up because of the smoke they put the mattress in the bath, soaked it and went back to bed. It burst into flames a few hours later. Luckily the last thing I had done before I left was to sign the revised insurance policy for when she arrived ..... there is a lot more to the story involving Belgian landlords trying to cheat us later.

yes it was very scary standing in the garden watching the smoke billow out the window and not no how long til the fire brigade arrived or how much i was going to lose in the house. it could have been so much worse than it was. All electrical appliances in kitchen had to be replaced, as did all the food (we had make a checklist as it was put in rubbish bags so we got it all replaced) as i put in it, the fire stayed in the cooker and the wall behind it and didnt spread, it was the smoke that went through all rooms that did the damage as everything smelt of smoke and had to throughly cleaned and then re-decorated.
