  • Anyone find Nathaniel Newey?

Please can anyone help me find anything at all about Nathaniel Newey after 1842.

He is with his parents in 1841

HO107; Piece 812; Book: 5; Folio: 15; Page: 24; Line: 2; He was born in 1821 in Easton on the Hill, Northamptonshire.

He is a naughty boy in 1842

NEWEY NATHANIEL EASTON TO THE HOUSE OF CORRECTION NATHANIEL NEWEY & NATHANIEL BEEZLEY, FOR SIX WEEKS, UNLESS £2 EACH BE PAID, FOR USING A DOG FOR DESTROYING GAME AT EASTON

    "above info from http://www.northants-familytree.net/1842.html"

I cannot find anything at all about him after that. Nothing on the 1851 (the family have moved to Stamford by this time.)

    I can't find a marriage or death.

I'm wondering if he continued to be a naughty lad and was transported.

    Can anyone help?

Well he may have been naughty and got transported, or he may (as troublesome boys sometimes were) been packed off to sea to serve on a ship - or he may have changed his name and become a reformed character/continued his dreadlful crimes!

Possibly if you can locate the house of correction you can get the records which would show when he was released and perhaps where he was headed?

            Nell

This has been one of my brick walls for years. I keep coming back to him over and over but get nowhere.
I just wondered if anyone had any ideas.

His elder brother, my great great grandad, was sent to the Leviathan Hulk prison ship in Portsmouth in 1838 having been sentenced to 7 years transportation.
He didn't go, as I wouldn't be here.

I found that he had been recommended for a Royal Warrant to be released.

Would love to find out what happened to Nathaniel.

What would a house of correction be in 1842? Is it just another name for a prison?

He was 21 so not exactly a youngster.

I would imagine it would have been in Northamptonshire

I think a House of Correction was a minor prison for poor people who hadn't committed any really serious offences, and there appears to have been one in Northampton. I am guessing that records would be held at the County Archives:
