Is there a way of finding the name of a person when all you have is a date and possible place of birth ?

If they died after 1984, you can search Ancestry.
If you know the registration district and it is small enough, you could do a blanket search of births to see if anything looked familiar. Provided there is 100% freebmd coverage, that is.Phoenix - with charred feathers

I don't think there is ever going to be an easy answer. Might he have been in the army in WW1? You might get useful info on the Ancestry site - if you had any clues as to what his original name might have been.
Could he be on the 1901 census? Do you think he might have changed just his surname? Would that narrow the field at all?Phoenix - with charred feathers
