Sorry for the delay in making my reply but I had to feed my owls.
Ellen Mawdsley is my great aunt. She was born in Kirkby in 1856. Her parents are James and Ellen Mawdsley.
Ellen had the following siblings:-
Margaret 1849
Mary 1851 (this is my great grandmother)
Jane 1853
Elizabeth 1858
George Barlow Mawdsley 1861 (he also died in 1861)
Possibly a James 1862.
James, the father is shown as being a labourer/quarryman.
I have had no end of problems with this, my paternal line. My great grandmother is Mary the sister of Ellen, and Mary married a John Roberts in 1868. (I do have this cert.) Mary`s` son John, who is my grandfather, ran away from home about 1890. To avoid detection he signed on a ship going to Australia on a two year voyage, using his mothers maiden surname of Mawdsley.
He never disclosed this name change to any family member. He married using the name Maudesley, all his children and the ofspring of his sons, carry the name Maudesley, me included.
It is only this reseach that has underlined various stories, that has enabled me to get the info I have to date.
I hope that by finding children of the Mawdsley clan, I can perhaps make contact with others researching "my" family.
The help I am receiving is so very much appreciated, I am truely grateful.
Not sure if you have managed to follow what Tracy and I have come up with here! There are quite a few possibles around!
If you are happy that the 1891 census is the right one, then I don't think the 1881 census you found is the same family. I think there are two different family groups here and the one that you want leads back to Thomas and Mary Tinsley in 1851, with Thomas junior being shown as aged 5 (see post #18)
