You’d think you couldn’t lose anyone with a name so unusual but that’s two mistranscriptions from what you thought in the censuses, yet she was actually registered as Yashti.

I think sometimes the more unusual names are the hardest to find mainly due to mis-transcriptions.

          Well done

I know the name Vashti, so Yashti is probably a mistranscription too! (Vashti is often a Romany name).

That’s from the GRO online index. I wonder if the actual cert got it right, poor lassie

Vashti was the wife of King Ahasuerus (king of Persia) and put aside by him for refusing to appear in front of his mates at a banquet. She was succeeded by Esther.

You have just spurred me on and I have been adding to my family tree. I have a first cousin twice removed named Vastina and I only had her in 1901. I went to see what else I could find and have found her marriage, death, gravestone and several children....so thank you for giving me the push I think they were a Romany family as the main occupation of the men appears to be horse trader and her mother's father was a chair bottomer who travelled around.

Thank you everyone - I wondered why I couldn't see her on the GRO index either! Some of this line were travellers so doesn't surprise me that there are several romany names mixed in It's what I love about reserching my large family tree
