    Hi All,
I am new to the site which I came across by googling James Haddon Henderson (1861-1865) who is linked to my husband's side of the family.

I am advised by a Henderson relative that they do not recognise either Lt.Col George Henderson & Mary Tower or George Henderson & Mary Sutherland as his parents. She has one piece of info which suggests a George Henderson (iron turner) and Frances Taylor as possible parents.

As search on Familysearch.org has also thrown up George Henderson and Isabella Henie in Kirkcudbrightshire. Although Isabella does not feature in any children's names.

Have you made any progress since 2019?

    Thanks
    Dilson

Am struggling to find anything to connect before 1851, even looked at the directories.

I keep wondering where Haddon fits in, my grandad hated his middle name and didn't always use it but that was from his maternal line. Am not very good with Scottish records.

    Good one, OC!!

I've been thinking along possible similar relationships for our guy ............... my first thought was actually the man he was apprenticed to as cabinet maker. But no ............ after I'd traced that man through several censuses.

We have OH's grandfather's apprenticeship paper so that gave me a head start.

    Sylvia

The early 1900s brought out a rash of middle names in my family, lol,and they were all in Manchester. The one which made me laugh was the Seymour middle name of my great grandfather, my grandfather and my father. My grandmother said it was because we are descended from.Jane Seymour's family. Quite by chance I came across my great grandfather's acceptance into the Congregational church on his 21st birthday. His sponsor was Seymour Mead, a well known Lancashire grocer! Haaaa!

He could just have adopted it for some reason unknown!!

Possible reason ............ too many other people with the name James Henderson.

OH's grandfather was a Welsh Methodist Minister, going to college in Manchester in his 20s after apprenticing as a cabinet maker. At some point between starting college and graduating in 1900 he suddenly has a middle name. I cannot find him with that (or any) middle name before 1900, but there it is on his graduating notice, in the 1901 Census and on every other census, document etc that I've found, up to his death in the 1930s.

Our assumption now is that there were several other Welsh Methodist ministers with the same name (true), and he decided to add a middle name to distinguish himself.

What we do not know is why he took that particular name of "Morton" as I can find no relation or apparent connection with that name. It must have had some significance to him!
