Thanks Elaine, I now have Francis arrival in Melbourne, death and burial details. Dont think that we will ever find his brother Alexander, Francis went to Montana so perhaps Alex as well but why leave his wife and young son, perhaps gold fever!

Never give up though! I just found someone by accident yesterday. He had run off to the USA leaving his family behind. I found he had remarried while his wife was calling herself a widow and his son was in an Industrial school back home in Lancashire.

I wasn't even looking for him, he just popped up further down the page on someone elses record!

Thousands of Cornish men went after gold as you know. It was often seen as a cheap form of divorce, lol at a time when divorce was not available to any but the rich.

So glad I looked on the Victorian Archives for me too. Found some brilliant background on my rellies husband and why she went back to Australia, ties in her sister who originally went with her too.

Hi Anne, you got lucky! I never give up, I keep trying to think of other avenues. I think that he did a "skip" on his family and O.C is correct in what he says. At some stage his brother supposedly went to Montana so this is a possible link but cannot find either of them going anywhere on a ship, also records in the "Wild West" towns in the 1860,s would be non existent I guess.

Hello Elaine, finally got the certificate, the only name recorded is Mary, no second name. She was illiterate so that is possibly why her age differs at various times? So, is that her in the 1881 Barrow census with a second name and an age 10 years out of whack, we will never know!
                Have a good Christmas
                :D
                Regards.
