  • The GRO's new mother's surname option ... AGAIN!

So, I am using the GRO to check for any previously unknown children of a friend's ancestor this time. (I previously started a similar thread about a child who

    Father: George James Ouseley
    Mother: Alice nee Cross

    This one comes up:

    OUSELEY, ETHEL MAY CROSS Order
GRO Reference: 1899 S Quarter in SAINT OLAVE SOUTHWARK Volume 01D Page 254

I haven't heard of an Ethel before, so checked and she's showing on the 1911 census as the daughter of Henry and Emma Ouseley ("Ousely" on census). I checked and Emma's maiden name wasn't Cross it was Buckland.

So, any ideas/guesses what happened there?

But Ethel Ousely daughter of Henry and Emma in 1901 is shown as 11 months old so born round about May 1900, not 1899

I have found Ethel May to be a very popular name around that time. I think it was a fashion thing.

Perhaps Emma married twice. It is not unknown for birth certs to show previous married name instead of correct maiden name. I have been doing Staffordshire research last week. 10 chdren, 6 have mother's previous married surname and 4 have her maiden surname. They are not even in date order but higgledy piggledy mixed.

Hmm.. well, Ethel Ousley is listed in the 1911 census - whereas there is a death record for Ethel May. I think that must have been her. Sorry, I posted too soon!
