    Help with Australia research please

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to tie up loose ends on my tree and have been looking at a great uncle William Henry Devereux born 2 Dec 1862, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. He is on the censuses 1871 here and 1881 here with his mother Ellen but then disappears.

I found this today http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/16...l=ReturnRecord for W H Devereux age 23 arriving in Melbourne on 1 Sep 1886 aboard the Harbinger.

Can I find out more about this chap to see if he is mine or not? If so where do I look?

    Margaret

Thanks webwiz - where did you find that? I'm trying to find out what happened to him so would like to see if there are any censuses etc.

Can I get the marriage cert for the record you found?

Have just downloaded the marriage record for that reference and see it's not my relative - this one was born in Abbotsford which must be in Australia and father is not correct.

I think this one might be that marriage Val, to Ellen Bunn. If so I imagine he is the one born in Tewkesbury in 1868.

Can't be him as he disappears from censuses after 1881 and I have looked at all the possibles anyway.
Thanks for having a look though.

Thanks Vera - got the image and that's not him either.

The only other clue I have and it may not be connected but William's brother George Henry Devereux is showing on a passenger list here http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...26pgplz0q3dpid coming back from USA.

Why George went to US and back I don't know - he resided all his life in UK so my thought was possibly to do with his brother but can find no trace in US or Canada for William Henry!

I think that's the William Henry Vera found and I've confirmed it's not him.

This is the link to the Trove site in Australia - specifically three articles mentioning William Henry Devereux
                            http://trove.nla.gov.au/result?q-fie...e=&l-language=

They all relate to the will " dated May 1, 1893, and two codicils of later date, of Mary Ann Edwards, formerly of Sandringham, but late of 179 Domain-road. South Yarra, who died on November 15 1894" ... " £200 to William Henry Devereux, of Richmond, and £100 to Emily, his wife".

Lots of the bequests specify a relationship, but none is mentioned for WHD.

Thanks for this - I did spot that myself and I think he's the one Vera found and who I've now discounted having seen his marriage to Emily.
                              Thanks for looking.

I'm now going to have a more in depth look in Canada and USA in case he went there - just no sign of him on a passenger list!

It does look as if it's the same one, doesn't it.

I have a really frustrating thing in my tree: someone who was in England, then Canada and the USA. In one of his USA docs, he says exactly how and when he travelled from England to Canada... but he's on neither the passenger list nor the crew list for that crossing - nor a number of crossings either side. :(
