Hi I'm a new member.I Have been interested in my mother's family tree. she passed away 2007. I am looking for Clarke / Smart of Leicester. I grow up never seeing her extended family, just her sister and mother. But they pass away when I was young , I never seen my granddad he pass away when my mam Betty Marie Clarke was young. is name is Robert Clarke. my grand mothers name is Alice A Smart. my mam always said about her distant family that two brothers her dad was one and one sister Surname Clarke. married two sisters her mother was one and one brother surname smart, just in the same two family's it's confusing, Any advice please I'VE just subscribe to find my past

Do you have any marriage or birth certs for your grandparents?
If you have those perhaps we can go back to the censuses in 1901/11.
The marriage cert will give father's name and occupation as well as where they were living.Kat

You will need to register first - free.
From FMP find the Year and Qtr and place that the marriage is registered at plus the Vol No and Page no.
If you need help just shout.
That will give the fathers' names etc so you should be able to find your gran and grandad on the 1911 census and then be able to move backwards.
If you don't already have it your mothers birth cert will prove her parentage See Elizabeth's post.Kat

If you are near the records office, can give you the church, only the price of a photocopy...60p, not checked the records at the main library but worth a call you, will have to go to Wigston otherwise, just in case you haven't ordered it yet
