can anyone read the name at the bottom of the passport application please.... I think that the first name is Emil

why would you have a passport sent to someone that is NOT your husband?

Re the passport - many thoughts, maybe if her marriage was breaking down she didn't want William to know she was leaving so had it delivered to a friend? Regarding the odd one at post 25, I looked at this too and I think it's for a Mildred Liddell who was Swedish and trying to get US citizenship - I don't think it's your Mildred.

the more I delved into that swedish lady the more I think that she was just coincidental.

at least she is ruled out now.

I wonder if WHL just lived with Helen then, but passed her off as Mrs Lydall? which is why we can't find a marriage?

but I do think that it does seem odd that she should have a PP sent to someone other than her husband, but, it does throw up the theory as you say Linda, so perhaps this was her escape route like you say.

Also doubt that she would have gone to Bermuda for a divorce - Bermuda is a British overseas territory and therefore uses British Law. Would have been much more difficult to obtain a divorce there than in the US - if she could even have done so being a US citizen.

I have just been looking at this, his name was Emil J DANBERG [if you look at the 'D' for Dentist on the back of Mildreds passport, [JR JOHNSON'S occupation] you can compare it, it looks the same].

anyhow, I have now found him in the census, interestingly, when he marries he has a daughter named Mildred!! [she later goes into the family business and works with her father] he becomes a lawyer.

                              so another dead end there!.

Hi Julie, following your post about WHL and Helen just living together, I checked back in the 1924 directory to see if Helen was at the same address as WHL but she is not listed. However there is a hotel at that address, so who knows!

Also , in the 1938 directory WHL and Helen are at 9 Summit Ave, and in 1941 (the next directory available) they are at 138 Kenoza Ave. Using a very handy website I found for tracking down the correct Enumeration District for addresses in the census, I had a trawl and found that in 1940 138 Kenoza was empty, and 9 Summit Ave was not mentioned, so unfortunately no joy there.

At the moment can't think of any other avenues of research!

By the way in the 1938 directory, Charles and Lucy are living at 123 Webster. He is retired.

ah thank you Linda, I think that my next course of action will be to see if I can find a marriage in England for Mildred [you never know!]

if I don't have any joy I will have to put her on the back burner for a while and concentrate on his sister Nettie b. 1877 [don't know what her 'proper' name is, but she is still alive by 1900 as lucy [mother] says that 2 born and 2 still alive. [though I realise that can be wrong sometimes]

I am then going to continue down the list of Lydalls I need to add to the tree and progressively get the census etc for them.

thanks for the info on Charles too, I'll make a note and add that when I get to him :smilee:

Not sure exactly what you're after - 272 Main seems to be a big office building, it's where Mildred had her passport sent. There is a Dentist practice there run by Albert Johnson, maybe JR Johnson who signed her passport app. practiced there. Here is a link to the entry in 1919

                                      http://search.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/...945&sid=&gskw=

Ooh - just seen - Emil Danberg, a lawyer has his office there too - makes more sense as the passport is addressed to him.
