Oh yes Val - very posh - here he is in 1871 as a 3 year old Henry Preston (He was the illigitimate child of Eunice Preston) -
Not so posh by 1881 though Val Here they all are in the workhouse and he is now being called Harry Smith -
By 1891 he has 'escaped' to Lancashire as Henry Smith a waiter in an Inn -
In 1901 he is Henry Smith - a barman in Blackpool Lancashire - (His future 'wife' is also there working in a hotel) - wish I could find a marriage lol
By 1911 he is living with his 'wife' and family back in her home town as Harry Smith. He was Harry on EVERYTHING from then on until his death as Henry. The 11 years marriage is a lie to cover up the fact that 'son' John wasn't his (he was born out of wedlock). He is now in a different job but on the birth certs of the other two he was still a Barman. I have spoken to the daughter of a VERY old but living 'sister' of the 'wife' who confirms they arrived back home from Blackpool. -
Discover your family history and build a family tree with the world’s largest genealogy website. Search birth records, census data, obituaries and more!
So there you have the saga of the 6 year search for Henry/Harry Smith. I don't see how I can ever prove it, but there are so many facts that fit (and a cartload of certificates) and through following every other Harry/Henry Smith through the census who didn't fit, I am happy that's it him.
p.s. Well you did askLast edited by Chrissie Smiff; 09-03-13, 14:12.Chrissie passed away in January 2020.

You don't know the half of it Val His 'wife' was also born under a different name to the one she always used in later life and unofficially adopted at 5 weeks and brought up as adopted daughter. I was told by the same relative about how it came about and that's quite interesting too. It made the Smith search even harder though because I was looking for a different 'wife' name in the census too. I was new to it in those days too and it's a wonder I didn't give up many timesChrissie passed away in January 2020.

Funnily enough I have a funny story about the Harry thing. As you know My Granddad's Aunt Sarah married a Harry Reid and that's who Granddad is named after but there's a slight difference. Harold was in fact Henry and so Granddad got the wrong name. So the morale of the story is to always find out the name of the person that your naming a child after..Lennon. Phillips. Thomas. Peacock. Tubridy. Burton.
I am the girl from that town & I'm darn proud of it.

Since starting this I have been amazed at how many of my friends and neighbours aren't known by their real names?
our best friend who we have always known as Jack is really Trevor ? a neighbour who is known as Shirley is Pamela ,and my Grandmother who I always knew as Sadie turned out the be Susan, took me ages to find her records.
Could go on forever but wont.
