  • Disappearing Trotmans

This family is linked to my wife's family by a second marriage and I have a couple of Trotman rellies as contacts on GR. One of them has mislaid his g-g-uncle.

William Trotman (1841 Woodford, Glos.) married Eliza Lee (c. 1864, Gosport) in q4 1860 Alverstoke dist., Hampshire. I have William in 1881 and 1891 in Monkwearmouth. And I have Eliza in Alverstoke in 1851, 61 and 71, and in Monkwearmouth in 1881 and 91.

They had 9 children, some registered Alverstoke and the remainder Sunderland where they moved circa 1875. The children appear in some censuses as noted below.

    William A (c. 1864) (1871 Alverstoke, 1881 Monkwearmouth, 1901 Sunderland (married)
Eliza (q1 1866) (as above but not married in 1901)
    John Thomas (q3 1869) (1871 Alverstoke, 1881 Monkwearmouth)
He is the one my contact is searching for.
    George Edward (q3 1872) (1881, 1891 Monkwearmouth)
Grantley Berkeley (q1 1877 Sunderland) (1881, 1891, 1901 (married but thinks he was born Portsmouth)
    Granville (twin died in infancy)
    Frances J (c. 1878) (1881, recorded as Francis)
    Jessica (c. 1880) (1891 aged 12)
    Elizabeth (c. 1885) (1891 aged 6)

I can't find John Thomas Trotman after 1881 so all I can think is that he's been badly mistranscribed. And I can't find the parents or any unmarried children in 1901 apart from Eliza.

Anyone up for a challenge please?

I found that one too. I discounted it because his place of birth is given as Stockbridge, which is nowhere near Alverstoke or Portsmouth. But it is the best match so far.

Thanks very much Elaine. I'm happy to add your nuggets of information. I want to add a correction to the 1901 census entry but I can't get into Ancestry UK.

Back again (got locked out of FTF for some mysterious reason).

I've now found Eliza in 1901 at Southwick, Durham, married to Thomas Hardie, with her two youngest daughters. RG13 Piece 4724 Folio 119 Page 68.

I've had a look for a marriage in FreeBMD and the full BMDs from 1894 to 1901 but can't find one. Just off to look in UKBMD - nothing found.
