    Places of Worship Project

    Do you own a Camera?
    Do you like exploring churchyards/villages?
If so FTF needs your help with a couple of projects.

The Places of Worship project was started in October 2007 with the aim of providing photos of churches and chapels (including ruins and conversions) in England, Scotland and Wales where your ancestors may have been baptised, married or buried. The use of these photos in your research not only helps to put “flesh on the bones” but also gives the added bonus of adding images which you may not have the opportunity to take yourself.

We have had tremendous support with this project since it started .. but we need more!
Do you think you can help? If you have a camera and a church nearby, then you can!

Another FTF project is the Foundation Stones database. Whilst you are out and about, keep an eye out for any foundation stones or plaques that you might see on buildings, churches, etc. What we need here is a transcription, rather than a photo,

What to do with your photos and transcriptions:

Photos for the Places of Worship project can be added to the photo threads in our Regional Projects forums
    • click here for England and Wales

In the same forums you will also see regional discussion threads, so why not add a comment and introduce yourself. If you need information as to which photos have already been submitted and which are still needed, the coordinators will be there to help.

Any transcriptions for Foundation Stones can be added by you directly to our database, accessed via the Site Projects link on the navigation bar at the top of the screen.

Get your notebooks out and batteries charged and start snapping! We look forward to seeing lots of new submissions.

There are many sites on the internet which have images of churches. However you will generally find that they cannot be copied and posted/used elsewhere because of copyright and licensing conditions.

When members submit images to our project, which are then uploaded to our server, they are granting a licence for their use by Family Tree Forum and its members under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.
Because we need to be sure that the images have not been taken from other sites where there may be copyright/licensing restrictions, we ask that only photos taken by members themselves should be submitted.

        Elaine,

I appreciate that but there is of course the option of linking to these pictures or alternatively contact the photographer. Colin Hinson who has done a lot I am sure would say ok to you using them so long as they were not on a paid site. If you would rather I can contact him and ask him to contact yourself or take a look at the project

We do realise that there is an option of linking to pictures on other sites, and of course a few sites allow you to copy and use for other purposes.
What we are trying to do here is to provide images which can be FREELY used by members, for example for posting on their own web pages or for use in their family history research, without the fear of copyright/licensing violation.

Is anyone looking after South Wales Elaine? I ask because I posted a photo on there back in September and I don't think anyone has looked at it yet. Most of the photos I took on holiday were North Wales and Lynn did those. I wonder if I should repost it on the North Wales thread as it was only just in the South?

Not sure that we have anyone at the moment. FamilyHistoryStories who was coordinating it hasn't been online for some time.
Didn't notice your photo on there - will check it out and one of us will upload it.

Thank you Elaine I seem to remember it wasn't a very good one as the gate was locked and I couldn't get a great angle. Probably better than nothing for now though

thanks Cresser, if in future you could post them in http://www.familytreeforum.com/forum...mp-Isle-of-Man then go to Region 03: West Midlands : Places of Worship Photo thread

you can then add the link as you have done for Photobucket in that thread, and then it can be uploaded to the database. many thanks for the photograph, it is very much appreciated

Thank you Debbs, if you could possibly upload via photobucket to this thread http://www.familytreeforum.com/showt...04#post2410404 stating County>>Place>>Church dedication [if known] it would be very much appreciated, I can then check if it has been added to our database

no worries, it is better if you can use it, [photobucket that is] as it doesn't put any strain on the sites servers... but I have added it to the database and yes you got it in the right place.
