  • is this the correct death?

My ancestors were Thomas Gadd (1810-1865) and Mary Anne Wills (c.1816- ?) married 1839 Chichester, Sussex. Thomas was a grocer, and they are listed in the 1841 (both 30, b.1811) and 1851 censuses in Chichester. Mary Anne is listed as 35, b.1816, Chichester.

Thomas remarried on 19 apr 1857 at st Giles-Cambwerwell, London to Emma Wills (Mary Anne's sister). he was listed as a town traveller, and the address for them was Clayton Rd, Peckham. they are in the 1861 census at 3 hill st west, Camberwell. occupation is "town traveller for a ?blacher". he then dies in 1865 in Hertfordshire, occupation is once again "master grocer".

i haven't definitively found a death for Mary Anne, but have a possibility: 18 jan 1856, 17 Gerrard st, Islington. Mary Anne Gadd, 46 years. wife of Thomas Gadd, clerk. informant: Jane James, 6 Roberts Yard, Islington- present at the death.

the family has moved to London between 1851 and 1857. there are no deaths in Sussex, and for London, this is the closest i can find in age. the only real issues are the location of Islington and Thomas' occupation of clerk. i have no info suggesting they were ever in Islington, and all members of the family are found in Lambeth/Camberwell or Marylebone after 1857. i'm less worried about him being a clerk, as he came from a line of yeomen farmers and was a grocer. he also signed both marriages, so i believe he was literate. i also can't find anything on the informant, she isn't a known relative. i also can't see this Mary Anne and Thomas elsewhere.

i actually think Mary Anne may have been ch.3 nov 1811 at st Andrew, Chichester as "Anne". as i can't find a Mary or Mary Anne to her parents Robert Wills and Anne Vye.

is the death in 1856 Islington my Mary Anne?

did have a wander around the newspapers, not found anything apart from him being bankrupt in 1854.

          oops, sorry I blame stress!

Here are the 1854 reports on him, I think they must mean that is when he moved to London, and likely not a grocer for a while as he was sorting out the bankruptcy, clerk could fit in for a few years then.

Many of the listings say he is just a farmer, these ones say farmer and grocer

they are all here - https://www.thegazette.co.uk/all-not...s-page-size=10 think this link should work

Will keep looking and then see if anything about Mary Ann

Thanks for looking Carolyn, will keep it as a probable until i can confirm otherwise.

I have wondered about that farm in New Fishbourne. I'll have to dig out his father's will and see if it may be inherited. The Gadd's were yeoman farmers for generations.
