  • Electoral registers

    Hello,

Are there any electoral registers / directories for the war period for Berkshire online anywhere - not something I would normally look at but trying to find an address for someone's grandmother who was a housekeeper for a coat manufacturer that moved from Ealing to Berkshire during the blitz. Her grandaughter is visiting the town and wanted to know if she could find the address!

    Thanks all

I have a feeling the ERs were not kept during the war. I may be wrong but worth checking.

Hmm, that was my worry! Thanks

I found the coat manufacturer in some sort of London directory in 1940 but can't see anything obvious after this especially not in Berkshire where they apparently moved to duing the blitz!

So Alan D Wallis on the 1939 is with his Mildred in Ealing. He is a ladies coat and costing?? manufacturer.
The housekeeper moved with them to Wallingford, Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) during the blitz. Her name was Victoria Agnes (or vice versa) Clegg. She had a daughter, who by 1939 had been evacuated to Kettering - Victoria/Agnes is the lady my friend is trying to find an old address for in Wallingford so thought trying to find the Wallis' would be the link!

          Thanks

              Carolyn,

It's the address in Wallingford where Victoria (Agnes) and her daughter would have been before going back to Ealing I'm trying to find.

As far as I'm aware the daughter is no longer alive but until I confirm I won't post her name.

              Thanks for taking a look!!

I thought daughter of Victoria Agnes was evacuated to Kettering during War years? How do you know Victoria Agnes was in Wallingford?

                  Vera,
I'm told that at some point the daughter also came to Wallingford - not sure if it was during or after the war before they went back to Ealing?
Victoria/Agnes was the Wallis' housekeeper and came with them to Wallingford during the war.
                  Thanks

if you can get her name, I can have a look, I wonder what the connection was to Wallingford, as they all seem to be in Ealing before and after the war, but did change addresses.

could be worth getting Mildreds will, she may have left something to her/her daughter and put addresses in, unless you know where they were in 1966. I can't find a death for Agnes

                      alans will, he died first

If Victoria Agnes had her daughter with her at the time she accompanied the Wallis'
to Wallingford post 1939, daughter would have been in School.

Royal Berks Archives have records of St John's Primary School, Wallingford 1863-2010 ie log books etc tel 0118 937 5132.

Agnes and Cicley died in Leicestershire, I have no other info. I will look at Vera's suggestion but think I will be telling my friend to tell her friend that their address in Wallingford can't be found!

                          Thanks all

if she went to Kettering in 1939, she would have been in school there, and she may have only gone for a short time. My Mum b1925 had her schooling messed up due to war.

nothing I can see in the papers. Do you think the daughter joined them in Wallingford?
