  • 1939 Register

Certainly been a learning curve on 1939 register, and there seems to be no list of all the abbreviations used, guess some were the scribers own!

but I thought it would be fun to put all of our thoughts and findings on the register here.

find my past have a full list of all the districts here. I found layout a bit weird as 2 columns in different order!

    https://www.findmypast.co.uk/articles/1939-register-enumeration-districts

    Found this
    • NR = National Register
    • CR = Central Register
    • I/D = Identity Card
    • M/C = Medical Card

NR230 is change of name by deed poll
CR230 name change took place due to marriage or divorce

ARP is Air Raid Precautions (Air Raid Warden)
    PWC is Post War Credits
    FA is Family Allowance
Red Cross volunteer, Special constable etc

    various advice here

The two columns are so you can find districts and associated codes in two ways -
Left side group of columns - search by code to get district or
Right side group of columns - search by district to get code

re NR230 - I think it’s more broadly change of name for reasons other than marriage - the change doesn’t have to be formally logged by deed poll. I’ve seen it used for very minor alterations eg adding a middle initial or middle name, correcting spellings, taking partners surname without being married etc

    Researching:
HOEY (Fermanagh, other Ulster counties and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) BANNIGAN and FOX (Ballyshannon, Donegal, Ireland and Portland, Maine, USA) REYNOLDS, McSHEA, PATTERSON and GOAN (Corker and Creevy, Ballyshannon, Donegal, Ireland) DYER (Belfast and Ballymacarrett) SLEVIN and TIMONEY (Fermanagh) BARNETT (Ballagh, Tyrone and Strangford, Down)
