  • Trying to find John and James' births / baptisms

Following on from my previous topic Where are they in 1851? - Family Tree Forum

now trying to find the birth / baptism of John Henshall, son of James Henshall, weaver

    Census info lists him;
    1861; age 34 born France
    1871; age 42 born Guernsey
1881; age 55 born Gansey (B S B), France (as listed on Anc'y) British Subject
1891; age 65 born Heance (as listed on Anc'y)
1901; age 70 born Guernsey, Channel Islands

Also John's brother James, who according to 1861 census was born 1834 Cork, Ireland

Is anyone please able to help with these searches?

This link may help with Guernsey:
This is a guide to finding records of births, marriages and deaths in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not part of the United Kingdom and have their own currencies and legal systems, but are dependencies under the Crown. They come under the jurisdiction of the […]

      thanks for Guernsey link

FMP might have something for Ireland? Was the father in the army at all?
I did wander if that might be the case ... only got one clue about their father and that's on John's marriage cert i.e. father James Henshall, weaver !!

According to National Archives -Online records

There are no birth, marriage or death records for the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man available to see online.

Yes but the link said the records were held at a library, perhaps they might recommend how to proceed?

Sorry, I haven't been able to find the baptisms, but what I think is James's census entry in 1851 leads to their parents being James Henshall (Silk Weaver) & Martha Winnell who married in Prestbury 1823. Both were said to be 'of Macclesfield of this Parish', bachelor & spinster. Witnesses were Saml Latham & Joseph Taylor,

By 1851 Martha was a widow

          1851 Pearce Street, Macclesfield - HO107/2160/142/7
Martha Henshall 45 Widow Charwoman born Sheffield, Yorkshire
James Henshall 17 son Mill Piecer (Silk) b Cork
Isabella Henshall 15 daur Cleaner Piecer silk b Macclesfield
Henry Henshall 9 son b Macclesfield

HENSHALL, HENRY mmn WINNALL GRO Reference: 1841 D Quarter in MACCLESFIELD UNION Volume 19 Page 108

I thought this was them in 1841 with Martha wrongly enumerated as Sarah, but all the children were said to be born in County and the only birth for Isabella that would fit has her mmn as Unthank

          1841 Park Lane, Macclesfield
          James Henshall 45 Silk Weaver
Sarah Henshall 40 - Not born in County
          James 13
          Thomas 10
          John 7
          Isabella 2
