  • Where are they in 1851?

Maria Phillips married John Henshall (sometimes transcribed Henshaw) 1850 Macclesfield, Cheshire

    according to 1861 census
    • Maria and John were both born 1827, although this varies on some censuses
    • Maria was born Staffordshire
    • John and Maria are living with John's brother James and his wife at Castleton, Lancs.
    • John is a silk weaver (thereafter a power loom weaver)
Is anyone please able to find Maria and John in 1851?

Not sure about this but the nearest I can find in Cheshire

John Henshall 30 Maker up of Silk born Macclesfield
Mary Henshall 27 Silk piecer born Siddington
    John Henshall 4 born Macclesfield.

    Living on Oxford Road Macclesfield.

Do you know John was a widow on marriage certificate and full age so John could be from his previous marriage

      Hi Lin
Thanks for speedy response, not sure about your find as according to 1861 census John was born in France whereas 1871 & 1881 he's listed as born Guernsey.

Is this the marriage 1850 marriage that you got your info from?

Just done a bit more searching and think the 1851 census is for John and Mary Barber married 1844 so ignore it. All fits with young John.

there are 2 births in 1851 and 1852 in Macclesfield Henshall and Phillips, so thinking maybe them, still in Macclesfield? can't find them though.

Thanks Carolyn ... these must be the children of John and second wife Maria.

As well as trying to find John and Maria in 1851, still trying to ascertain who John's first wife was.

I think I've 'found' John's first wife ... doing a bit more research to make sure.

they are the children on 1861 census, it was difficult to determine the parents on census.

you have found the marriage? and he was married before?

John and Maria are parents of the children, I checked mmn for all of them.

yes + his first wife died so did the 2 children they had.

Not sure if you have seen the parish record for the first marriage but witnesses are Thomas George Henshall and Louise Henshall. More of his family might help finding them.

yes, thanks I found it on family search.
Louisa was John's 2nd wife, looks like she may have been a friend of Mary Ann.

Thanks again to everyone who has helped find this family.
