  • Help with Edith Smith

    Hi all,

Edith Smith is born 1867 in Belper (according to census) - I think I have her baptism below (but not sure if it's correct)! On the 1871 and 1881 she is living with her grandmother (so not sure if Emma is her mother and if so what happend to her)!
Walter Smith b.1855 Sheffield on the 1871 census is living with his mother (Ann) and step father and his niece (Ann's grandaughter) Edith Smith. I think this is his birth record and his baptism but would like your advice if you think this is correct as this would give me the parents of Edith's mother (Walter's sister) to then try and find. I *think* she is Emma but unable to really find anything concrete yet!

    Thank you for looking, Tessie

The baptism you have for Edith shows her mother Emma's address as 5 Short Row, Belper, and it seems too much of a coincidence that the baptism immediately below that is for Walter Burgoyne(?) aged 15 same address with parents named as George & Ann.

    Possible birth registrations?:
BURGIN, WALTER mmn SMITH GRO Reference: 1854 D Quarter in SHEFFIELD Volume 09C Page 306
BURGIN, WALTER mmn HARTLEY GRO Reference: 1854 D Quarter in WORTLEY AND PENISTONE Volume 09C Page 150

Thanks Teasie (I didn't see that) - on the 1871 census he is a Smith though and Edith Smith's birth register (GRO) has no MMN meaning Emma wasn't married so she must have been a Smith too so I'm a little confused?!

I'll have a look though and see if I'm missing something!

Yes, it had/has me confused too, but it just seemed too much of a coincidence. I'd love to say I have the answer, but I don't!

The best I can find for the family in 1861 is at the same address - Short Row, Belper- but Ann's age is way off: RG09/2509/105/10

Ann Smith 56 widow born Belper
Charles Smith 13 son b Belper
Emma Smith 11 daur b Belper
        Walter 8 son b Belper
