I'm hoping that someone with knowledge of connections can help me, as i am confused with how people are linked.

my 3rd great grandaunt maternal is also the grandmother of my great aunt by marriage paternal. What does this mean in terms of my parents being related?

If the second connection you mention, great aunt by marriage, is right it would mean she was not actually related by blood to your father's family. Therefore the relationship to your mother's side is the only blood relationship.
