Release date for the 1926 Census of Ireland announced

Still a while to wait, but good to have a date for release - and it will be free, too!

The Irish Government has today announced that the 1926 Census of Ireland will be released online and free in April 2026. The project will be carried out by the National Archives of Ireland.

The reason the date is 1926 and not 1921 was that the census was not taken in Ireland because of the War of Independence.

Just in case folks hadn’t twigged from the map, the 6 counties of what is now Northern Ireland are not included in this census. The 1926 census for Northern Ireland was destroyed.
