  • The Peculiar People of Essex

Hello, does anyone know if / how the Peculiar People of Essex kept baptismal and marriage records? Specifically in the late Victorian period? For anyone not familiar they were an evangelical branch of methodism who split and formed their own church. Eventually they split themselves into old and new Peculiars. They were linked to the Oxford Movement and are now part of the evangelical Church movement. Any information gladly received. Thank you.

Good morning Mosestu and welcome to the forum. I must admit I had not heard of them so have looked up a couple of websites, and while I don't have the answer to your question a number of people also researching have left their email addresses (something our forum does not permit) on the Rochford District Community Archive so maybe some of them could help?

Ha ha ha Julie. A fair description of myself

Actually there is a church near me in Witham (Guithavon Valley Evangelical) that was originally used by the Peculiar People. The Peculiar People prayed if someone was ill rather than use a doctor or medicine. However a Diphtheria outbreak killing children caused them to reevaluate their beliefs and the movement split into two. Old Peculiars (sounds like a type of bitter!) who believed in the prayer method and the New Peculiars who allowed medical intervention. They changed their name to Union of Evangelical Churches in the fifties. The church near me is one of 16 that remain.
