  • Struggling to find family members in 1881 and earlier

Trying to find the head and wife pre 1891 (pre marriage?) based on the following census. I've just stumbled on this family so have very little to go on.

1891 Census at Ashton's Court, Lincoln, details below are as transcribed on Ancestry (obvious errors in transcription). Image says head of house born Galway, rest of the family in Lincoln.

Martin Walsh 35 Head b Gatbury, Ireland
    Mary Walsh 41 Wife
    Mary Walsh 13 Daughter
    Patck Walsh 11 Son
    Peter Walsh 9 Daughter
    Margarett Walsh 6 Daughter
    Martie Walsh 5 Son
    Ellen Walsh 2/12 Daughter

I'm guessing Patck is really Patrick , and Martie is Martin. I'm struggling to find the kids in the bmd, there's a couple that might have the mmn as Wallis/Wallace but the only marriage I can find for the parents is a Martin Walsh to Margaret Kelley, Jun qtr 1881, Lincoln. The 1944 Lincoln death and probate of a Martin Walsh or Kelly looks plausible for 'Martie', probate was granted to Margaret Maddison wife of Alfred Maddison, 1907 marriage Margaret Walsh to Alfred Maddison.

This should go part way to unravelling
        1871 , also Ashton’s Court Lincoln
Oliver Kelley head 26 married labourer born Ireland
Margaret Kelley wife 22 born Newark
Oliver Kelly son 2 born Lincoln
Mary Kelley dau 1 month b Lincoln
Catherine Wallace lodger widow 47 child woman born Ireland
John Wallace lodger unmarried 40 Taylor born Lincoln

Oliver Kelley married Margaret Wallaces (sic) q1 1868 Lincoln
They have Oliver and Mary as per 1871 above in q4 1868 and q2 1871.
Then the additional Kelly (sic) children in the 1881 census found by Katarzyna.

Oliver Kelley dies q1 1880. Et voila, Margaret Kelley nee Wallaces (or whatever variant is used most consistently) remarries to Martin Walsh in q2 1881 Lincoln.

I haven’t checked thru all Margaret’s assorted Kelley/Kelly and Walsh children on GRO to see how her maiden surname is recorded.

        Christine

EDIT - Katarzyna obviously types faster than I do!

Well done peeps. my head has been spinning since the DNA stuff came back and nothing has been making sense. My grandmother told whopper on my father's birth cert about who my grandfather really is, through DNA there are some links to Walsh family from Ireland and she just happened to be living in the house alongside the archway entrance in Ashton's Court Flats. I don't know for sure if there's a link but clutching and straws springs to mind.

News reports and later census put the family in Ashton's Court though Martin 1850 whenever seems to have left (there were a few separation orders granted to Margaret at different times reported in the papers).

I've sat on my father's birth cert since 2006 waiting for the 1921 to come out and then the DNA bombshell drops so who knows, pieces of the puzzle might, or might not have been right next door to her all along, I've got to start somewhere and this seems as good a place as any.
