I have a name and service number which could well be the WW2 RAF serviceman I’m looking for. To look at the record is £30, which is maybe ok if I have the correct person. Is there an alternative?

As long as you know he definitely served with the RAF and you know his date of birth and can prove his death, it's worth a go. Or, if not, if he married or had children during WW2 and you have the certs, or you have him on an Absent Voters list - some online, or 1939 Register might mention his WW2 service number, or a local newspaper mentioning him.
