I need to get stuck in to the emigration / passenger lists to look for Margaret. Also those USA censuses. I had only tried looking for her living in USA with her son and drawn a blank. I had no idea at the time that she even had two younger sisters called Jeanie and Janet.
Thank you folks for the hints

Still not sure from the censuses. I'm thinking that these could be the same woman but there are inconsistences.
1915 New Jersey State Census but it says she has been in USA 50 years so that isn't right as she was in Scotland till at least 1891. My Margaret's birthday was May 1842 not February 1841. (There are no matches on earlier New Jersey State Censuses)
Margarett Mitchell Female W 74 Widow Feb 1841 Scotland 1915 Address North 10 St Sec. Dist Sec. Ward, Paterson, New Jersey, USA 9 Second Retired 50 Yes Yes Yes Rent Scotland Scotland 11 36 243 125
1910 US Federal Census. This one looks very promising as when correct age as written is taken into account, everything else is possible. The 1892 immigration makes sense as my Margaret was last seen in Scotland in 1891 and according to her marriage certificate, she was literate. .
Margreat Mitchell[Margaret Mitchell] 78[28] (it actually says 68) 1832[1832] (so yob would be 1842) Scotland Paterson Ward 2, Passaic, New Jersey, USA White Female 1892 Head Widowed Scotland Scotland English Rent House (Address: Temple Street, Paterson, Passaic, NJ) which is only 2 properties away from the Moser household where she is in 1915 above) Yes Yes 1 (It's correct she only had 1 child born and living as she and Robert had no children of their own) 1 Margreat Mitchell 78 Head
1900 US Federal Census not found her. She should be on it if she immigrated in 1892.
Passenger lists etc. - not found Margaret.
New Jersey, U.S., Deaths and Burials Index, 1798-1971 Haven't found her in here either

Not having much luck finding Margaret before the possible of 1910. Sisters Jeannie and Janet living close by in Paterson NJ. Can see Jeannie and Janet 1900-1930.
Sister Jeanie Holland with Daughter Margaret arrived in USA 1897. Record shows they had been in USA 5 years previously. Maybe travelled with Margaret but can't see them. EDIT 1897 Jennie Holland b 1857 Liverpool to NY on the Teutonic
Janet Houston with husband William arrived 1893 on the Furnessia. Glasgow to NY

So, there are two of her sisters in NJ, right? Is there certainty that these are indeed her sisters? Can we get links to those census records?
NJ can be a difficult place to research, with not so many records online. But if we were very fortunate, perhaps one of the sisters has a lengthy obit that gives some bit of info about your peep.

An additional record but still no Margaret.
1893 Found Jeannie Baird 36 with children Margaret 16 and Annie from Galston
1st May on the Furnessia to NY
1895 13 June Mrs Holland 38 and Miss M Holland 19 on the St Louis NY to Southampton.
They returned 1897.
