  • Witness name help please

I'm working on a will transcript and am having trouble reading the surname of the second witness, John. Any ideas please?

Might be getting warm with this one, I think it could be Budgen which is a local name. Thank you.

Could be Pudsea? A variant spelling of Pudsey.

It’s not an easy one at all but Budgen is my best guess.

I really do't see that 4th letter as a g. Looks more like an old s to me.

I feel it starts with a 'd' and has an 's' of a bad 'f' in the middle.

As I'm still not sure I'm going to submit it to Sussex Family History Group with a link to the original so that anyone who orders the transcript can take a look for themselves.

                      Thanks everyone
