  • Help with this family please

    Hi

I am hoping someone can help with the following family please! They appear on the 1871 census, then two of the children are in the workhouse in 1881 and i can follow Jane through to 1911. However i cant find anything to do with the parents, or any of the other children. Can anyone find them prior to the 1871 census?

    Many thanks

Lensgirl could you summarise the family details for those that don't have Ancestry please?

      Yes sorry.

Hugh Gough born Cavan C1819. I believe i have found him in 1841 in Chatham barracks and then with the family in St Giles in the Field in 1871
Wife is believed to be Jane Corrigan, born in Stockport c1832 (name varies on GRO of the children)

Was Jane his second wife? (my query is based on the ages of the children.) If so, that could explain name variations on the GRO, if you mean the GRO index?

I am actually wondering whether she is the one with the previous marriage. I can't find any birth records of Amy or Michael that could be a possible match. Jane Jr is listed as MMN Carrigan, then there are 2 Hugh Gough children with MMN Callaghan.

I can't find Michael in the 1861 census, so I wonder if he is listed under another name. They just seem to appear in 1871 and then disappear without a trace!

Just wondering how you know they are Hugh and not Henry?

do you have Janes Marriage? no useful witnesses? am guessing father is Hugh?

I am thinking this is another family as there is a Jane on her own and she is a hawker Dec 76? the 2 children were discharged to a school.

In 1861 the family is recorded as McGoff - RG9/168/55/40

This might be John's birth, and perhaps an earlier marriage for Jane?

Another 'possible' marriage: 1861 St Giles, London - Jane CONNIFF & (same page) Hugh McGOVERN

English records are notorious for 'Mangling' Irish names!

It looks like Matthew & Michael were twins, born before Hugh & Jane married:

MCGOFF, MATTHIAS mmn BARRY GRO Reference: 1858 S Quarter in ST GILES & ST GEORGE Volume 01B Page 359
MCGOFF, MICHAEL mmn BARRY GRO Reference: 1858 S Quarter in ST GILES & ST GEORGE Volume 01B Page 359

So it looks like we're still missing Henry born Hull, who presumably was Jane's son but not Hugh's.

Hmmm, not sure where that 'Barry' surname has come from, as the twins were baptised at St Anselm & St Cecilia as children of Hugh & Jane. The original is in Latin, but translates as follows:

Born 17 July 1858, Baptised 5 August 1858 Mathias s/o Hugh & Johanne McGoveran nee Corrigan. Godparents Dionysus Ryan(?) & Anna Sullivan
Born 17 July 1858, Baptised 5 August 1858 Michael s/o Hugh & Johanne McGoveran nee Corrigan. Godparents Joseph & Elizabeth Buckley

                              Then this:
Born 1 Feb 1863, Baptised 15 Feb 1863 Matthias s/o Hugh & Joanna McGofferin nee Carrigan. Godparents Patrick Dobbin & Margaret Ryan

They seem to have several other children baptised, including:

Anna McGOVERN Born 5 Dec 1860
Joanna McGOURAN Born 4 Dec 1866
Gulielmus (William) McGOVERY born 29 May 1871

Good find, the workhouse records that I found were all mcgough, I needed sleep, but now you have found this, must be a surname they used.

Jane and Hugh were in Edmonton I think.

Do we know what happened to Hugh Sr? He goes into Holborn workhouse 13 Jan 1872 and leaves on 16th, and that's the last I have of him so far.

It looks like Jane absconded on 22 Jan 1877: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...11&cat=1389833
