  • TAYLOR v TAYLOR Oldham UK

Anyone following John Taylor, born abt 1846 with a son Edwin born abt 1876. All the family born and married in Oldham, Lancashire UK. Need the right wife or two.
Known facts, my paternal grandparents Edwin Taylor/ Amy Atkinson Sydney 1921 married. Children John, Joan, Gordon. All now deceased.
On marriage certificate for Edwin/Amy states Edwin,s father as John Taylor, (Parliamentary Agent) and Mother Victoria Chapham(deceased) not able to get any information on these two people. almost as if John Taylor and Victoria Chapham do not exist as a married couple.

Maybe another John Taylor, I think there are a few in Oldham.

    Thanks for listening.

GRO Index has the following birth entry.
Edwin Taylor. Dec Q 1875. Oldham. Mmn Clegg. I cannot find him in 1881, and cannot make any connection with the others you mention.

How do you know John, snr, was born circa 1846?

I can't see any marriages between a john taylor and a victoria prior to the 20th century on fmp, freebmd nor lancsopc.

did edwin marry in 1921, sydney nsw? Do you have the death cert? Roughly when did he arrive in nsw? Does his death or births for his kids also state he was born in oldham, lancs? Do you have him in any census?

Online trees say that he was first married to Alice Elizabeth Clarke in Cambridge, England in 1894, and that she died in NSW in 1918.

From the UK census, that particular Edwin was born St Edmunds, Lincolnshire (presumably Sutton Saint Edmunds) - see 1901 census RG13, Piece 1550, Folio 27, Page 7

In 1881 there is a family in Sutton St Edmunds headed by a John & Victoria Taylor, with children including Edwin aged 4 - RG11, Piece 3207, Folio 25, Page 11

This would appear to be his birth registration:
TAYLOR, EDWIN mmn DUXSON GRO Reference: 1876 S Quarter in HOLBEACH Volume 07A Page 387

John was from Sussex & Victoria was from Cambridge, and they appear to have married in 1859 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

John was a labourer, not a parliamentary agent.

ADDED: Alice E Taylor nee Clark(e) aged 44 died in Ryde district, NSW in 1918. Edwin & Amy married in Ryde in 1921.

Following on from the above, Edwin's military papers are on National Archives of Australia. Service No 3705. Enlisted 1917 claiming to be 43 and born England. Next of Kin was wife Alice at Waterloo Rd, Eastwood, Sydney. Discharged 8 Feb 1919 - Senility & Arterial Sclerosis.

See also John Edwin Taylor, Service No. 6397 - his English-born son - KiA 1917.

ADDED: On John Edwin's records there is a page signed by Edwin in 1922 authorising his wife AMY ISABELL TAYLOR to collect John Edwin's memorial plaque on his behalf. Amy then signs to confirm its receipt.

Reading through this where has 'Oldham' come from as family don't ever seem to have lived there?
